Are you running your business or is your business running you?
Normally here on my blog we chat beauty and health tips for our brides and amazing clients, but today is a bit different. I have a strong feeling that this topic is needed for many of you as i know i needed this same advice as im about to give. It doesn’t matter if you’re in wedding industry, beauty industry or even a health coach to use these tips that helped me create a crazy amount of free time that allows me to do what i want when i want.
The mistakes i made
Now before i dive in i’m going to mention something that’s i didn’t realize that was holding me back when i was trying to”run” my business. I was once a workaholic before i went fully into my business. At one point i had 5 jobs at once and not trying to brag but i was a great employee. I was always on time, did extra work, helped clean, even going above an beyond for customers. Now what does that even have to do with the topic i’m talking about…a lot.
Stop operating like an employee and start working like a CEO
I was so use to working for other people and putting in hours and hours while working hourly and some commission based jobs here and there an it became my norm. I was use to getting paid based off the number of hours i put in. This placed me with the mindset of me thinking in order for my business to be great that i needed to put in 80+ hours a week to be a success. Boy was i wrong. My sleepless night of me getting off work from my part time jobs and working until the next day without sleep up to almost 36 hours was becoming a daily thing. I was stressed because the things that i was focusing my time on where not the things that were most important or beneficial.
Mindset is key!
Lets get first thing straight you can not..i repeat can not operate your business with an employee mindset. There is nothing in writing that gives a step by step of what you need to do each day unless you make one. What does your ideal work week or work day look like for you. You need to map things out from where you are now and where you’re going and break it down step by step. Becoming an business owner is nothing that’s fully learned over night and you have to work at it daily even when you don’t see the fast results when you want to see them.
Are you following Beauty and the Network on Facebook?
Now if you have not already viewed my video on Facebook on my Beauty and the network page i highly suggest watching that as i share with you how i brain dump and create an action plan for my goals for the year. Now if you have already done that lets go ahead an dive into number one of the mistake that’s are killing your productivity.
Seems so simple right but when things are simple much discipline is needed behind it.I use to wake up some days around 4:30 am . Id go for a quick run and get my yoga in and work from my computer from 6 am until almost 10pm at night. I had no strategy and i was honestly doing the most..but not in a good way. id work on one project for a bit then move on to something else. I was the queen at multitasking because i thought it would be better to have a few things going at once so that i feel like i’m accomplishing a lot at once. Well this ended up in me working on projects for way to long.
How much time would you’ve saved if you blocked out 3 hours for a new project or even working on that project 2 hours a day for the next 3 days. That project that never had your full attention or focus can be completed in less than a week rater than 2 months! Work can pile onto your today list if you are not mapping out your tasks in a beneficial way. Block out the amount of time each day your going to work on a certain task and your life will be so much better. you will even start to realize that the amount of time you blocked of was way too much and get your work done even faster.
Now what the heck does this even mean? I once listened to a podcast from Jenna Kutchers Goal Digger Podcast and she put me onto batching my work and child…..MAJOR time saver. For example id time block about 4 or 5 hours for one or 2 days out of the month and create 4-5 blogs that i can store for the next few 3-4 months. Maybe your not a blogger and you want to make videos. Last month i spent a day filming 6 videos that i can post for the next 2 months and I do the same with my bridal clients. I have a huge binder and i know which clients i need to reach out too and what details i need to gather from them. I call this my client batching day. I’ll send out timelines that i created at a prior time and send them all at one time other then doing them continuous throughout my work week.
I challenge you to start doing this! Batch your Instagram posts or Facebook posts and learn about automation and how it can be your best friend.
Plan ahead top 3 tasks:
This one was a bit hard for me honestly. I would normally pile my to-do list for the day with about 20-30ish things that id need/want to get done that day. Now what a bummer it was at the end of the day when i’ve only did maybe 8 of the 30 things on my list done. I was working myself like a crazy person because that’s what i was use to doing when i was an employee. I now stick to having 3-5 main things that you need to get done each day and anything you got done additional will be a bonus. I started using Sundays as my day to map out my month and breakdown my weekly to-do list so i got everything done that i needed to.
Making time for yourself:
Now my favorite part of all..and yes its self care. Now i was never the hippie woo woo kinda gal nor was i the person to make time for myself. I use to think i can do all that stuff later in life. Well what ended up happening was i would be a workaholic and book myself to the max and my poor little body was aching. My back was killing me my shoulders hurt an i never was the kind of person to call out of work…EVER so i sucked it up and dealt with it. I never rested and the words “Me Time” was foreign to me.
I didn’t know i was allowed to have me time because in order for me to believe that i needed to see a result and they weren’t there yet. I remember so clearly one day i woke up and i had meetings all day long and woke up with a stiff neck. If i tried to turn my head i felt it in my back but i somehow still got dressed and went to my first meeting. While sitting there waiting on my meetup to start..because i’m always early i called the nearest massage place. I didn’t care the price and i didn’t care the distant, All i wanted was to get in within the next hour. That was my very first time i treated myself and that took me down a path of zen. I now booked a massage for myself every…single..month! That is now my non-negotiable for myself. It’s something i could look forward to to treat myself and that took me down a road of being mindful of what my body is telling me it needs. We only have one body y’all and if we work ourselves until no return as a business owner even worth it. Now i do self care throughout the week with yoga, eating right, mediation, d.i.y facials at home an whatever else makes me feel like the best version of myself. When we are in our greatest head space our productivity benefits from it.
Yass! you’ve made it to the end
